Locating a Place to Fill Your Alternative-Fuel and CNG Vehicles

While it's true that in most respects propane and Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) vehicles are superior to those running gasoline, there is still one major area which can cause issues for those looking to invest in alternative fuels:  Fueling stations.

Propane and CNG vehicles for sale still face a challenge when it comes to getting a fill-up.  Since gasoline has ruled the road in the US for so long, there are comparatively fewer gas stations which support propae or natural gas.  This can be something of a deterrent to those considering CNG vehicles for sale and understandably so.

Nonetheless, the situation is getting better!  And as more and more companies continue to invest in alternative fuel fleets, there will be that much more market pressure on filling stations to provide options besides gasoline and diesel.

Finding an Alt-Fuel Fill-Up Station Near You

Currently, the best way to locate a source for propane or CNG stations in America is to visit the US Alternative Fuels Data Center.  The AFDC (a division of the Dept. of Energy) maintains a lookup database with maps for both natural gas and propane stations.  These are updated constantly, as new stations upgrade their offerings.

Natural gas stations are the better choice here, with nearly a thousand across the US and in all but a handful of states.  Propane currently lags behind, with a little more than three hundred publicly-accessible stations.

Why the Situation Is Getting Better

While consumers are slow to adopt non-gasoline cars, there have been big pushes towards use of alt-fuel systems in public transportation as well as related transportation fields like school buses.  In fact, today it is estimated that roughly forty percent of buses on the road use alt fuels, up from less than ten percent in 2000.

These big public-area pushes towards alt-fuel are likely to be what inspire more stations to offer gasoline alternatives which, in turn, will inspire more propane and CNG vehicles for sale.  The tide may be slow in turning, but it is turning nonetheless, with more public alt-fuel stations becoming available yearly.
